Tipper driver dragged to court for killing six

A 22-year-old truck driver, Muraina Taiwo, was on Tuesday arraigned before Magistrate Opeyemi Badmus of the Osun state magistrate sitting in Osogbo for hitting and killing six with his truck.
The defendant was arraigned on two-count bordering on driving without heavy duty permit and driving in a manner which led to the death of six.
The police prosecutor, Akintunde Jacob said that the crime was committed on the 16th day of November, 2019 at about 10:15hrs at Steel Rolling area of Osogbo.
He said that the accused is the driver of a man diesel tipper with the registration number FST 597 XY, which he drove without a heavy duty permit and also drove in a manner that led to the death of six.
He gave the victims names as: Suraju Abdul Salam, Olayiwola Shittu, Oyesakin Surulere, Abdul Lateef Azeez, Alabi Sayo and Kolawole Precious.
He also said the offences were contrary to and is punishable under section 18, 27 of RTA Cap 485 laws of federation of Nigeria".
The accused counsel, Taiwo Awokunle urged the court to commit the accused to, adding that he was ready to stand trial.
Awokunle also said that the family of the victims and N.U.R.T.W members have met and had agreed not to press charges but the police refused.
However, the prosecutor did not object the bail application moved by the acussed counsel but applied for the duplication of the case file for legal advise at the ministry of justice, because of the people that died.
In his ruling, Badmus admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 and two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned to the 17th of January, 2020.
