Wife drags husband to court for beating her up

A 37-year-old Isiaq Abdul Azeez was arraigned before an Osun state magistrate sitting in Osogbo, for beating up his wife.

Isiaq was arraigned on two-count bordering on assault and failure to make necessary provision for his wife and 3-month-old baby.

The police prosecutor, Adegoke Taiwo said that on the 16th of October, 2019, at Oke baale area of Osogbo, the accused assaulted his wife, Barakat Isiaq by beating her up.

He added that Isiaq also failed to provide  necessary provision to her and her 3-month-old baby.

He stated that "the offences is contrary to and is punishable under section 351, 300 of criminal code Cap 34 vol11 laws of Osun state of Nigeria, 2002".

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The defense counsel, Funsho Murtala applied for bail on behalf of his client.

Magistrate Adijat Oloyade asked if they are they legally married and asked the defendant to state his own part of the matter.

Isiaq stated that " yes, they are legally married, anytime he is financially broke, his mother-in-law usually react in a bad manner to him and that he  is not maltreating Barakat, the last day he gave her the sum of N2,000 was on the 13th of October, 2019".

Oloyade asked Barakat to state her own fact of the matter and she stated that "when she was pregnant, she did scan and she was told that her baby was sitting in her womb, that she need medical attention".

She added that" Isiaq refused to take to her hospital and asked to take some concoctions which he prepared himself".

She explained that she went through caesarian session when she wanted to give birth to her baby which her husband reluctantly paid for and he threatened to make her suffer because of the bills.

She stressed that she covers herself with a veil before but when her husband's trouble is too much for her, she had to reverse her dressing mode.

She explained that on the 16th of October, 2019 she wanted to go and collect some money at her husband's house, which he lived with his first wife. On request for the money, her husband started beating her with her baby at her back before people intervened.

Oloyade in her ruling, granted the bail application on the terms of N50,000 and one surety in like sum.
