Media should be more vibrant and focused in setting right agenda for development: Tech-U VC

The Vice Chancellor of Technical University, Ibadan, Professor Ayobami Salami has emphasised that the vibrant role of the the media practitioners in setting agenda develooment is indispensanle.


Prof. Ayobami said this today (Monday) while delivering a lecture as part of activities  at the state correspondent chapel Ago Tapa Mokola Ibadan, while delivering his opening speech  at the 2018 Annual Press Week.

 Professor Auobami said media need to be more vibrant and focused on setting the right agenda for development of our nation. "Just like the Czech playwright, Tom Stoppard, was absolutely correct when he averred that if your aim is to change the world, journalism is a more immediate short term weapon."

The Vice-Chabcellor said the Nigerian media system is gifted with the brightest and most courageous journalists on the continent and that just the way they did and succeeded in the era of military dictatorship, the media will overcome the current rigorous task democratic system."

"I expect that the media would re-enact its heroic wand not only to rescue the nation at such a time like this,but to also reinvent its practice and nudge it on the pathway of professionalism."

Speaking on the Technical University Ibadan, Prof. Ayobami Salami made it known that the University was owned by the Oyo State Government but with private sector orientation.



He disclosed that tbe University was conceived to provide functional, skill-oriented education to bridge the widening gap between graduates from tertiary institution and the needs of the society, particularly the employing organizations.

"Tech-U wws therefore established to expand access to University education and more importantly to address the employability gaps through entrepreneurial orientation of the average Nigerian youths".

"From being a mere idea, the University today has evolved into a top-notch, self sustaining institution that is committed to raising socially relevant and technically competent graduates equipped with requisite skills to provide solutions to industry problems and to chart the course for revolutionary ideas that can develop the society."

"With science, engineering, technology, research and innovation for societal transformation, the University is unwavering in its steadfast pursuit to combat the unrelenting scourge of youth unemployment in Nigeria by producing outstanding graduates who are self reliant and innovative. "

"Technical University sits on a site of 200 hectare of land along the Lagos Ibadan expressway. It is situated in the free trade zone area in which about 175 manufacturing companies under the Pacesetter and Polaris Consortium will establish full presence and carry out their operations."

Professor Ayobami said the location of the University at the proposed industrial hub was not a hapoenstance but deliberate effort to enable the students have the opportunities of industrial exposure and experience.
